Welcome

presidentOn behalf of the Program Committee for the 2010 American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine 2010 Annual Pain Meeting and Workshops, it is my pleasure to we come you to this event.

Prepare yourself for a fabulous learning experience in Arizona’s urban heart and America’s sunniest metropolis! Phoenix – America’s fifth largest city is a home to real cowboys, rugged mountains and the beauty of the desert. Phoenix is the gateway to the Grand Canyon and its history is the sum total of Puebloans, ranchers, miners and visionaries. Set against the backdrop of rugged mountain and beautiful desert landscapes, this city has jaw dropping scenery, arenas hosting some of the biggest sports spectacles, spas for soothing relaxation, golf courses that beckon players the year-round, stylish and eclectic shopping centers, and restaurants with inspired cuisine. Stay at the Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs, and enjoy the scenic views from the top of the mountain, championship golf, relaxing spa and salon services, and unique dining experiences including Different Point of View at the top of the mountain.

The 2010 fall meeting will feature a number of unique educational presentations. On Thursday November 18th, in addition to the combined basic science refresher course lectures, the meeting will host the inaugural presentation of the ASRA-FAER lecture. This year’s ASRA-FAER lecture will feature Sean Mackey, M.D., Ph.D. presenting the lecture “Opening Windows to the Brain: Lessons Learned from Neuroimaging”. Friday, November 20th will host a multimedia plenary session examining imaging for pain medicine in 2010 including ultrasound, fluoroscopy and O-arm imaging. There will be a wide variety of workshops on all aspects of pain medicine. In addition, there will be special workshops on Ultrasound in Pain Medicine, Spinal Cord Stimulation and Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain, Myofascial Trigger Points and Sensitization, which will be lead by world renowned experts in their fields. There will be 40 PBLDs covering a vast array of controversial pain medicine topics. New to this year’s meeting will be an educational video competition. Come view educational videos on interventional pain procedures created by ASRA members or create and submit one yourself to compete for the winning prize!

The resident education component has been greatly expanded and will include educational and networking events on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. There will be a special spinal cord stimulation workshop reserved exclusively for pain fellows on Wednesday, November 17th, the day before the official start of the meeting. Residents will be competing in the first annual “Pain Medicine Resident Jeopardy!” on Saturday, November 20th. With didactic lectures, PBLDs, workshops, open forums, and a special reception designed to help residents network with fellowship directors, this meeting is definitely worth attending!

The fall meeting will host the second Physician Assistant (PA)/Nurse Practitioner (NP) education program that will span a two day period. Educational topics will include the pathophysiology of chronic pain, opioid management, spinal cord stimulation –trouble shooting, the role of radiofrequency ablation and much more! Please encourage physician assistants and nurse practitioners in your area to participate in this program and register early as space is limited.

This year, all attendees are invited to attend the opening ceremony followed by a reception with the exhibitors on Thursday evening. The Bonica Luncheon will be held on Friday and is free for all members. Get ready for a full evening of fun on Saturday night when we all head over to the Corona Ranch, the venue for this year’s President’s Reception. The evening will include a reception, rodeo, mariachi bands, live music, line dancing with instructors and a full dinner. So, don on your best western gear and dancing boots for a fabulous evening of fun and entertainment at the Corona Ranch!

I look forward to seeing you in Phoenix for an outstanding educational and fun-filled meeting!
