In 1995, the ASRA Resident Section Committee was founded through the dedication of Vivek Mahendru. The intention of the Committee is to serve as a forum for discussion of resident and fellow issues and for the education of residents concerning regional anesthesia and pain medicine. The four areas that define its mission derive from its mission statement: specifically, membership, communication, education, and leadership development. Currently 3,114 residents make up 34% of ASRA's total membership, emphasizing the important role residents can play in component societies. The Resident Section Committee organizes annual Resident Forums, contributes to the quarterly newsletter, represents residents on the Scientific Program Committee and Membership Committee of ASRA, and recruits new resident members with a complimentary first year membership. We thank the ASRA Board of Directors for supporting resident involvement in ASRA and for recognizing the importance of fostering resident interest in regional anesthesia and pain medicine.
There are five elected positions in the Resident Section Committee. Nominations should be sent to the ASRA Resident Section Chair or Chair-Elect/Newsletter Advisor, and may be made by ASRA Faculty Members or program directors. Elections are made by the Resident Section Committee and are approved by the Board of Directors at the Annual Meeting. Responsibilities of each position are assumed at the conclusion of the ASRA Annual Meeting in the spring.
