President's Message

Lynn M. Broadman, MD
President, ASRA

The year has gone by quickly and my term as president of the Society is nearly over. Dr. James Eisenach will relieve me of my duties at the Chicago meeting. The turnover will take place on Sunday, 28 April 2002. I hope you can be there to participate in the Annual Meeting activities. It also brings to a close my twenty-year affiliation with the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA). I still plan to stay active member in the Society, but I will be leaving the ASRA Board of Directors in 2003. However, in the coming year if you have problems with the society or have suggestions as to how to improve operations please feel free to contact Catherina Marino <cat@societyhq.com> or me at <LBROADMAN@aol.com> and we will give priority attention to your matter.

Much of the energy of the Board of Directors during the past year has gone into expanding the ASRA educational program. We have gone to two full meetings each year to better serve your needs. The Spring Meeting will be held at the Chicago Sheraton Hotel from Thursday, 25 April to Sunday, 28 April 2002. There is an emphasis at this meeting on surgical and obstetrical regional anesthesia. In addition, there are over twenty-five free papers that deal with acute and chronic pain. More importantly, I am sure you will not want to miss the unique offerings at the Chicago meeting. There will be a three-hour live satellite telecast from Toulouse, France, showing block anesthesia for actual surgical cases. There will be both upper and lower extremity intensive anatomy and regional anesthesia half day workshops and you won't want to miss Parallel Session III, on Saturday afternoon "What is New in Anti Coagulation Therapy and Regional Anesthesia". There is still time to register for this exciting and innovative meeting and obtain discounted hotel accommodations.

The Annual Fall Meeting will be devoted entirely to pain medicine. This exciting three and one half day meeting will cover topics that range from basic science to advanced pain management techniques. It also will involve a block of new speakers many of which have never been used in prior ASRA programs. There will be Refresher Courses, Parallel Sessions and the Bonica Lecture. This meeting will be held in Phoenix, AZ and run from Thursday, 7 November until Sunday, 10 November 2002. Calling the ASRA Society Headquarters at 804-282-0010 or visit www.asra.com to obtain information about both the Spring and Fall Annual Meetings.

You may find two other meetings of interest. The First Joint World Congress on Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy will be held in Barcelona, Spain from Wednesday, 29 May until Saturday, 1 June 2002. There will be invited speakers from Europe, North and South America, and the Pacific Rim. One may learn more about this exciting meeting by writing: Options Eurocongress, 228 Avenue Louise - 1050 Brussels, Belgium or by pulling up the ESRA web page at <www.esraeurope.org>.

The final meeting I would like to mention is the Joint Convention of the Anesthesia History Association (US) and the History of Anaesthesia Society (England) to celebrate the contributions of Ralph M. Waters in the 75th year of his appointment as the first full time professor of anesthesia in the world. The meeting will be held in Madison, Wisconsin from Thursday, 6 June until Saturday, 8 June 2002. If you would like more information, contact Lucien E. Morris, MD; 15670 Point Monroe Drive NE; Bainbridge Island, WA 98110; 206-842-8089.

Again, I would like to thank you for your support and friendship during the past twenty years. I look forward to see you at one, if not both, of our Annual Meetings. If you have not yet done so, please remember you can pay your dues on line at www.asra.com.

Sincerely,

Lynn M. Broadman, MD
President ASRA
