and can be viewed online. The booklet is designed
not only to re-acquaint members with the many
benefits and services the Society has to offer,
but also to recruit new ASRA members. Remember,
membership recruitment begins at the grassroots
level. Make it your goal to recruit one new member
into ASRA in 2007.

membership categories, benefits, demographics,
CME mission and programs, research and award programs
and volunteering. The booklet also features information
on Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, the

the Society’s highly-popular newsletter.

Volunteer
in ASRA - TOP
ASRA features a structure
of committees and task forces comprised of members
who volunteer their time and expertise to further
the Society’s goals and mission. As a volunteer,
one not only assists ASRA in developing programs
and services that benefit practitioners of regional
anesthesia and pain medicine, committee service
helps one improve skills important to professional
development, including management skills, interpersonal
skills, communications skills, team building skills
and more. Volunteering to service on an ASRA committee
helps to stimulate creative ideas and programs
as well as places individuals on the path towards
leadership within the Society.
ASRA members are encouraged to volunteer
to serve on any of the Society’s committees
and task forces:
- Committee on Newsletter
- Committee on Communications
- Committee on Research
- Committee on Distinguish Service

Gaston
P. Labat Lecture Award - TOP
The
Committee on the Gaston P. Labat Lecture has issued
a call for nominations from the ASRA membership
for recommendations of an individual who has demonstrated
outstanding contributions to the development,
teaching and practice of regional anesthesia in
the tradition of Gaston P. Labat, M.D. (1843-1908).
The Labat Lecture is presented annually at the
ASRA Annual Regional Anesthesia Meeting and Workshop
held each spring. Members are asked to nominate
qualified anesthesiologists who have distinguished
themselves in two of the following areas of regional
anesthesia: research, teaching or clinical practice.
Dr. Labat and his colleagues founded
the original American Society of Regional Anesthesia
in 1923. It should be noted that his colleagues
wanted to honor Dr. Labat by calling the fledging
organization the Labat Society. The first ASRA
merged with the American Society of Anesthesiologists
in 1939 and dissolved after the merger. The records
of the early society are preserved at the Wood
Library – Museum of Anesthesiology at the
ASA office in Park Ridge, Illinois. The present
day ASRA was re-founded in 1975.
Nominations should be forwarded
to members of the Committee on the Labat Lecture.
Committee members are as follows:
