Asokumar Grant for Global Scholars Will Provide 100 Physicians with Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine Resources

Apr 3, 2019

A newly established grant will provide access to the latest research in the field for physicians from low-resource countries. The Asokumar Grant for Global Scholars will enable 100 physicians from low-resource countries to receive an annual subscription to ASRA's official journal, Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (RAPM).

"Doctors working in low-resource countries... face many obstacles in their work, but access to information and research should not be one of them."

The grant was established in 2019 by ASRA Outgoing President Asokumar Buvanendran, MD, and his wife, Jenn Asokumar, to support physicians from low-resource countries and share the latest findings and evidence-based standards of regional anesthesia and pain medicine.

"The science and technique involved in what we do as regional anesthesia and pain medicine physicians have a significant impact on patient outcomes, making their care more targeted, safer, and more cost efficient, and it just leads to better outcomes,” explained Dr. Buvanendran. "We wanted to do something that would help break down barriers of access to this important information for doctors working in low-resource countries. They face many obstacles in their work, but access to information and research should not be one of them."

The grant has been targeted for an initial three-year commitment commencing in 2019. Interested parties must complete an application by July 1, and recipients will be selected via a committee process.

RAPM has the third highest impact factor among peer-reviewed anesthesiology journals and is provided as part of membership in ASRA as well as the European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy. ASRA has been actively pursuing collaborations with other regional anesthesia and pain medicine societies to provide the journal to their members as well. The Academy of Regional Anaesthesia of India began providing the journal to its members in 2019. Other agreements are being discussed.
