Back Pain and Spondyloarthritis: The 2020 Update

A discussion on the presentation of chronic pain in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and the important role of pain specialists in the management of these patients.
Michael H. Weisman, MD, is a board-certified rheumatologist and has worked as an investigator for National Institutes of Health-sponsored studies in systemic lupus erythematosus, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and rheumatoid arthritis. He attended medical school at the University of Chicago and completed his internship, residency, and fellowship in rheumatology at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Dr. Weisman's academic and research interests involve the genetic risk, epidemiology, treatment, and outcome of rheumatic diseases, including clinical trials, outcomes research and health services research, and genetic susceptibility/severity studies of patients with chronic rheumatic disease. He has published more than 450 peer-reviewed papers, edited 12 books on rheumatic diseases, and serves as a reviewer and editor for many journals in the field of rheumatology, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Arthritis and Rheumatology, Journal of Rheumatology, and Annals of Rheumatic Diseases. He has recently retired from his prior appointment as Chief, Division of Rheumatology, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and is now Distinguished Professor of Medicine Emeritus at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Professor of Medicine Emeritus, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
