    Description

We offer a 1-year ACGME fellowship in interdisciplinary pain medicine. Our core faculty come from anesthesia, neurology, physiatry, internal medicine, and psychology. All faculty and fellows work in a co-located center eliminating the need to rotate out fellows to meet ACGME requirements. We seek to educate the fellow in and have dedicated faculty groups focusing on neuromodulation, orofacial/headache, spine, abdominal, pelvic, peripheral nerve/CRPS, pediatrics, and cancer. Fellows get exposure to pain psychology and pain physical therapy co-located in our pain clinic. Fellows will learn how to lead interdisciplinary groups of clinicians. Fellows have a continuity clinic whereby they will manage their own patients over a period of several months. We have a comprehensive inpatient pain service and consult, and run the pain service for acute on chronic and chronic patients. We have a robust research group and fellows have the opportunity to apply for an additional year of funded research through a dedicated Stanford Pain Division, NIH pain-focused T32 grant.

All applications to this program are to be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS®) on or after December 1 each year.

The University of California, Davis Medical Center (UCDMC) offers an accredited 12-month Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine fellowship in Sacramento, California.  The fellowship will train the candidate to become an expert in regional anesthesia including the use of ultrasound guidance as well as the management of perioperative pain.  Our acute pain medicine service performs approximately 3,000 peripheral nerve blocks many with ultrasound guidance and catheter placement as well as many neuraxial blocks annually and has a busy and expanding inpatient pain service.

Fellows will rotate in our main operating room perioperative area, a busy orthopedic focused outpatient surgery center, and the UC Davis Children’s Hospital operating rooms.  The fellow will perform single injection and continuous catheter techniques in the upper extremities, lower extremities, abdominal truncal region, and the posterior thorax.  The fellow will receive education and training in point of care ultrasound (POCUS) by experienced faculty.  The fellow will learn how to manage an acute pain medicine service, become familiar with pediatric regional anesthesia, and treat inpatient chronic pain patients.  To enhance the academic mission, fellows are expected to participate in a research project and will receive dedicated non-clinical days to work on scholarly projects.  There are 11 faculty members on the acute pain medicine service (APS) with substantial regional anesthesia experience and/or fellowship training.  This program offers an excellent training experience that can be tailored to meet your educational goals.

    Description

Starting in 1993 the UC San Diego Pain Medicine Fellowship has offered specialist training in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain syndromes, cancer, and acute pain. Our fellows learn to employ a multidimensional treatment approach that includes physical therapies, pharmacologic agents, psychological therapies, alternative medicine therapies, as well as a broad array of interventional techniques. The program’s multidisciplinary training of pain fellows includes core faculty from anesthesia, PM&R, and neurology. Fellows also receive training from guest lecturers and rotation faculty from psychiatry, psychology, palliative medicine, gynecology, orthopedic surgery, radiology, and physical therapy. We accept fellowship applicants from any discipline that offers ABMS certification in pain medicine, including: anesthesia, physical medicine & rehabilitation, neurology, psychiatry, and others. Clinical training occurs primarily at UC San Diego Health System’s Center for Pain Medicine outpatient and procedures clinics in La Jolla and at San Diego Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) pain clinic and pain procedure suite, also in La Jolla, California. Additionally, fellows consult on inpatients at UC San Diego’s La Jolla and Hillcrest Hospitals. Fellows have rotations in psychiatry, neuroradiology and palliative care. Each fellow receives four weeks of research time in order to concentrate on a project of their choosing. Fellows are paired with a research mentor who works closely with them throughout the 12-month fellowship. Lectures on anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, diagnosis, and management of pain are held weekly and cover a wide range of topics required by the ACGME. Pain medicine grand rounds are also held weekly and include M&M case conferences, multidisciplinary grand rounds with our pain psychologists, palliative care service joint case conferences, journal clubs, radiology rounds, and research forums.  All fellows take a graduate level neuroscience course on mechanisms of pain taught by UC San Diego pain clinical and research faculty.

All applications to this program are to be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service® (ERAS®).
