Rush University Medical Center offers a formal 12-month fellowship in Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine. This unique experience offers comprehensive perioperative pain management using a full spectrum of techniques via neuraxial and peripheral nerve blocks and catheters. In addition, there will be a novel ‘transitional pain service’ which bridges the gap between acute and chronic pain management. Fellows will complete this formal 12-month fellowship at Rush University Medical Center and satellite locations (One free-standing multidisciplinary surgery center and one brand new 8-OR Orthopedic-focused surgery center).

Fellowship rotations will involve managing multimodal analgesia, neuraxial and peripheral nerve catheters, local anesthetics and narcotic infusion, as well as non-narcotic analgesic adjuvants with emphasis on indications, contraindications, side effects, potential complications and daily management of patients on the Acute Pain Service. Implementation of the newest truncal and abdominal ultrasound-guided nerve blocks will be conducted at the main Rush University Medical Center. In addition, the fellow will be involved with two high-volume surgery centers, allowing them to experience the full gambit of placing highly technical and complex peripheral nerve catheters as well as fast-paced same-day-surgery regional practices.    

Several months will be spent learning how to implement and run a ‘transitional pain service.’ This unique opportunity (there are few such programs in the country) allows the continuity in care for managing post-surgical patients who have persistent pain longer than expected, and will involve interacting with a multidisciplinary team of health care providers including multiple national- and internationally recognized faculty. The fellow may have the opportunity to participate in the largest NIH-funded study of acute to chronic pain after surgery.

A scheduled didactic and workshop curriculum will be implemented throughout the year. The fellow will both receive and educate trainees via organized lectures, journal clubs and grand rounds. We currently provide a full regional and cadaver workshop for our residents 2 times per year in which the fellow will play an integral role in both preparing and teaching residents. The fellow will also have the opportunity to participate in dissection with a world renowned anatomist.  Fellows will participate in bench and/or clinical research with protected academic time and granted attendance to present at national meetings, such as the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA) and the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA).

Rush University Medical Center will be conducting web-based interviews for regional fellowship in mid to late April through July.

• All candidates must obtain a Permanent Illinois Medical License and have passed USMLE Step 3 prior to starting fellowship
