The Ochsner Fellowship program in Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine (RAAPM) is a one year program. Our faculty consists of nine RAAPM fellowship trained Anesthesiologists. While we do blocks for Orthopedic surgery cases, we also do them for Thoracic, General, Vascular, and Pediatric cases as well. These blocks include both peripheral and neuraxial, single shot and continuous, for inpatients and outpatients. Fellows have an opportunity to participate in all of these procedures, including our home catheter program.

Additionally, we have a Perioperative Surgical Home program for our total joint Arthroplasty patients. The team consists of one of the RAAPM staff, a resident and a nurse. With our guidance of patients through the perioperative process, we have been able to both reduce length of stay and increase patient satisfaction. The fellows actively participate in this process as well.

We have been ACGME accredited fellowship since the 2019-2020 academic year.  Our fellows spend five days per week with the RAAPM team (4 clinical and 1 academic). Fellows are also expected to participate in an academic project during the fellowship year with the goal of publication and/or presentation at a national conference.

      Description

The Ochsner Pain Medicine Fellowship aims is to provide the next generation of pain medicine physicians with exceptional clinical and procedural experience and knowledge. Our fellows will become a consultant in pain management who are able to work with a multidisciplinary team to manage acute and chronic pain patients, including cancer pain, in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. Enhancing communication skills as a team and with patient care (clinical and procedural) is a key component to performance as well. Ochsner Baptist campus is the primary teaching facility offering a one-year multidisciplinary fellowship training. Rotation length and specialty training include 9.5 months of chronic pain medicine rotations (Ochsner Baptist & Kenner), and 2.5 months of palliative care, PMR, acute pain, addiction psychiatry, and neurology. Fellows learn to perform initial assessments, treatment planning, documentation, pharmacological treatment, appropriate diagnostic testing, and enhancing procedural skills for treatments specific to chronic pain. Ochsner Baptist is home to the pain medicine fellowship and the Back and Spine Clinic located in the Napoleon Medical Plaza.  The facility is fully accredited and staffed by more than 600 trusted, skilled physicians and specialists.

The Fellowship in Regional Anesthesia at Tulane University is a 12-month program that provides the opportunity to gain clinical expertise in a wide range of peripheral and neuraxial blocks. There is a focus on ultrasound-guided techniques. The Departments of Sports Medicine and Orthopedics are among the busiest clinical services provided at Tulane, and we provide inpatient and outpatient continuous peripheral nerve blocks for a majority of those surgical patients. Our Regional Fellows perform an average of over 400 procedures (mostly continuous catheters), and supervise residents for many more. There is an emphasis on clinical experience and teaching, as well as an expectation to engage in scholarly activities and research.

The fellowship is a non-ACGME accredited program, thus allowing the fellow to be given a Tulane University School of Medicine academic appointment at the Instructor level.  Fellows spend 50% of their time performing procedures and supervising residents in the block area (with no concurrent clinical responsibilities), and the other 50% of their time is spent as an Anesthesiology faculty member supervising CRNAs and/or residents in a wide variety of surgical cases.
