Training for Johns Hopkins Pain Management Fellows emphasizes analysis and management of clinical and research problems, as well as innovation using practical solutions such as procedural, pharmacotherapeutic, physiatric, and/or mind/body therapies. Fellows gain insight and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of chronic pain from a variety of perspectives including anesthesiologists, neurologists and physiatrists. We also closely work with neurosurgeons, psychiatrists and oncologists who have expertise in pain management.

The goal of the Acute Pain Medicine and Regional Anesthesia Fellowship is for fellows to develop the skills and knowledge base necessary to perform basic, intermediate, and advanced regional nerve blocks. After completion of the fellowship, graduates will be experts in the management of acute pain in the perioperative and peri-trauma period, will have developed the knowledge and skills necessary to be a valued consultant in the perioperative management of acute and acute-on-chronic pain, and will have developed expertise in the performance of peripheral nerve and central neuraxial blocks.
Fellows will participate in various educational activities throughout their training which are done in collaboration with several other fellowship programs in the area, including workshops with hands-on cadaver dissections, point-of-care clinical ultrasonography education, and intramural journal clubs.
Additional Info:
A 3-year combined clinical (1-year) and research (2-year) training program is available for interested qualified applicants under the NIH-sponsored T32 institutional research training grant, which also offers the opportunity for sponsored advanced study, such as a MPH from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, for example.
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is still accepting applicants for the 2023-2024 academic year. Interested individuals should contact Drs. Hassan Rayaz (hrayaz1@jhmi.edu), Kara Segna (ksegna1@jhmi.edu), and Kellie Jaremko (kjaremk1@jh.edu).

The University of Maryland Regional Anesthesiology Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship is a full-time fellowship position. Clinical experience is divided between the University of Maryland Medical Center's main campus, the Shock Trauma Center and the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Institute (UMROI). UMROI has busy total joint and outpatient sports medicine practices. Peripheral nerve catheters are regularly employed, giving fellows the opportunity to learn about their management in both the inpatient and ambulatory settings. At the main campus and Shock Trauma, fellows provide all types of regional anesthetics including lumbar plexus blocks, paravertebral blocks, serratus/pec blocks and cranial nerve blocks. Fellows perform or supervise residents performing about 1500 blocks per year.
There is also ample opportunity for scholarly endeavors. Fellows receive one day per week of nonclinical time and two months of elective time. Fellows are expected to engage in a research or quality improvement project with a faculty mentor, with the goal of publication or presentation at a national meeting. Fellows also participate in our twice annual cadaver dissection program. Fellows participate in regular didactic lectures, journal clubs and our nationally attended annual regional anesthesia conference. We have an experienced faculty, including nationally and internationally recognized experts in the field of Regional Anesthesia for adults and children.
This program uses the common application. Submit the completed application directly to the individual Fellowship Program.
