Physicians applying for a fellowship program in regional anesthesiology/acute pain medicine must be currently enrolled in, or have completed, an accredited anesthesiology residency program. Each individual program may have additional requirements such as medical licensing. The information published here has been supplied by the individual institutions. Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Montefiore Medical Center is proud to be one of the original 9 ACGME-accredited Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine (RAAPM) Fellowships in the United States.
The goal of this fellowship is to provide outstanding, cutting-edge, clinical training skills to create confident practitioners who can run a Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain service independently and to create leaders in the field of regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine. The fellowship will provide advanced training in all aspects of pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine emphasizing clinical skills, teaching, and research. Currently all modern regional techniques, peripheral single-shot nerve blocks and continuous catheter placements and neuraxial techniques, are done. Blocks of the upper & lower extremities and truncal blocks (Pecs, Erector Spinae, QL, Lumbar Plexus, TAP, PVB etc.) are routinely performed under ultrasound guidance (with optional use of nerve stimulation) at all campuses. Apart from learning a wide range of regional anesthetic techniques, fellows will develop further expertise in patient recovery, patient outcomes, peri-operative efficiency, and reduction of hospital costs during their fellowship training.
Fellows will have experience in our:
- Fast paced, outpatient Ambulator Center working with various disciplines including general surgery, vascular surgery, gynecologic cases, plastic surgery, and pediatric patients in the block room
- Orthopedic Joint Replacement Center
- Robust Acute Pain Service
- Montefiore Multidisciplinary Pain Center
- Our dedicated Children's Hospital of Montefiore
We perform >4000 nerve blocks a year in a range of clinical environments, including a quick paced ambulatory outpatient setting and various in-patient hospital environments. Each fellow historically has accrued approximately 1,000 nerve blocks upon graduation. Due to growing volume, we have doubled the fellowship class size and added 3 new non ACGME accredited fellowship positions with attending time as part of this fellowship.
Fellow duties include patient selection and education as well as coordination of the regional anesthesia team's daily activities with the operating room anesthesiologists, surgeons, nursing staff, anesthesia technicians, pharmacists, and the acute pain service.
Academics, Teaching and Research:
Fellows are very involved in resident and medical student teaching and encouraged to participate in academic research.
Education includes Departmental Grand Rounds, a dedicated Fellow's College of important topics, and a core teaching curriculum that covers mandated ACGME topics, PBLDs, and Oral Board preparation. Also, there are multiple hands-on workshops and cadaver labs during the year.
All fellows participate in at least one research project and quality improvement initiatives, including manuscript preparation and data presentation at conferences.
It is expected for all fellows to participate at least 1 academic meeting during the year. Collaboration with colleagues internally and externally is encouraged.
At the completion of the training, fellows will be able to perform a comprehensive array of regional techniques, set up an ambulatory or hospital-based regional service and become prepared for the practice setting of their choice: academic or private. Moonlighting opportunities exist for all fellows.
This program uses the common application. Submit the completed application directly to the individual Fellowship Program.
