The December Member Spotlight showcases David Flynn, MD, MBA, an associate professor of the department of anesthesiology at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill. Dr. Flynn is also a course co-director of the Medical Student POCUS Elective, Transition to Practice Program, and Personal Finance Lecture Series.

Nominated for the December Member Spotlight feature by Dr. Stuart Grant, Dr. Flynn obtained his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He completed his residency and internship in the department of anesthesiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.  

A member of various professional societies, Dr. Flynn belongs to the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, the Healthcare and Financial Management Association, the National Association for Healthcare Quality, the North Carolina Society of Anesthesiologists, and the American Society for Anesthesiologists.

His current research projects include: 

  • Using POCUS to Assess Gastric Contents Among Fasted Patients Taking GLP-1 Agonists in UNC Hospitals, 
  • Comparing Preoperative Intravascular Volume Status and Subsequent Intraoperative Hypotension in Elective Surgery ERAS Patients versus Emergent Surgery Patients at UNC Hospitals, and 
  • Using the Venous Excess Ultrasound Grading System to Assess Fluid Status.

With a strong business background with his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business, Dr. Flynn serves ASRA Pain Medicine and the membership by volunteering his time as an American Medical Association CPT Alternate Advisor. ASRA Pain Medicine CPT Advisors work within the AMA to add, delete, and review current CPT codes.

In the coming weeks, Dr. Flynn will leave his current position in academic anesthesia at UNC Chapel Hill where he has worked for the past five years. Dr. Flynn will join a private practice in January 2024 called the East Carolina Anesthesia Associates (ECAA) in Raleigh, North Carolina. He will continue to serve as ASRA Pain Medicine's CPT Alternate Advisor in his new role.
