Dr. Matt Thames

This month’s Member Spotlight features Matthew Thames, MD, MBA, from the University of Virginia (UVA) Heath System.

Nominator Nabil Elkassabany, MD, MSCE, tells us that Dr. Thames is an up-and-coming star in regional anesthesia and acute pain medicine. “He is an excellent clinician, dedicated to the service of his patients. He is a team player and outstanding contributor to our regional anesthesia group,” Dr. Elkassabany states.

Dr. Thames is an assistant professor and clinical instructor of anesthesiology at UVA Health. He received his MD from UVA School of Medicine and his MBA from UVA Darden School of Business in Charlottesville, VA. He went on to complete a residency in anesthesiology and a fellowship in regional anesthesia and perioperative management at UVA Health.

Dr. Thames’ interests include bioinformatics, and he serves as the department lead for the EPIC and Systems Management Committee. He has significantly contributed to the creation of a dashboard to capture quality metrics to assist with benchmarking against similar institutions.

Dr. Thames serves as the ASRA Pain Medicine alternate advisor to the American Medical Association’s Relative Value Scale Update Committee. Dr. Elkassabany applauds Dr. Thames for this “very important role of representing ASRA Pain Medicine on the largest platform. I cannot wait to see what the future will hold for Matt,” he concludes.
